Chinese Antarctic expedition team first arrived the Dome A with 4093m high in Jan. 2005, which may provides unique opportunities for astronomy. The currently relatively well studied site, Dome C, was found to have a 99% clear date record, and the median atmospheric seeing is as low as 0.3 arc seconds, with the turbulent layer confined mostly within 30 meters from the ground. It was suggested that Dome A, being at a higher elevation than Dome C, may be a better site than Dome C for astronomy.
To stimulate discussions and ideas of astronomy at Antarctic, the LAMOST project and the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) organized an international workshop on Wide Field Survey Telescope at DOME C/A on 3-4 June,2005 in Beijing,China. More than 40 astronomical experts attended this meeting and made a lot of discussions about the potential telescope projects on Antarctic Dome C/A. Currently, United State 、Australia and China etc. all joined in the cooperation, the telescopes will be manufactured by NIAOT. Now, the Antarctic Astronomical Center of China(AACC) has set up to take part in the PANDA plan of IPY. Taking the advantages of the going to be established Chinese Antarctic inland research station, we will mount 4 small telescopes (CSTAR) on Dome A at the end of 2007 and will start the site testing work and observation.
The near-, mid-, and long-term plans
Near-term( about 2~3 years): 1) 14.5cm telescope CSTAR; 2)35cm site testing telescope; 3) prototype of wide filed survey telescope XIAN;
Mid-term(about 5~8 years): build the 400 telescope array with 50cm aperture XIAN; 2-m LAMOST type survey telescope
Long-term(about 10-15years): 8~16m LAMOST type telescope at Dome A
2-m LAMOST type survey telescope
