The antarctic team of Nanjing Institute of Astronomy and Optical Technology (NIAOT) is responsible for the development of special instruments for quality detection of ice snow track, which is Key projects for ”Science and Technology Winter Olympic Games” of 2020.

The project called "key technology of ice snow track production under different climatic conditions" was funded by the National key R & D Program of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

According to the characteristics of track, particle size and hardness detectors of ice and snow were developed in cooperation with China Institute of Meteorological Sciences.

In the future, these instruments will also be used to test the bearing capacity of foundation covered by ice and snow in the Kunlun Station of Antarctica, which will Service to the construction of the Antarctic Observatory.
