On 28 Feb 2013,the technical acceptance meeting of ion beam polishing equipmentwhich is sponsored by The National Natural Science Funds (NSFC)was held in NIAOT。

Leaders and experts invited from NSFC 、Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST)、National Astronomical Observatories (NAO) etc attended the meeting。

Prof.Guo weiyuan (project leader) reported the executive condition of the project。

Prof.Cheng lei(leader of the test expert group for the project acceptance meeting)reported the on-site test results。

The whole expert group carefully examined the contents of the project and inspected on-site the equipment, which is the biggest one in China with accuracy of λ/100 during  polishing 。

All the experts agreed that experimental results and relative technical data of project reach requirement of NSFC。

Prof. Yongtian Zhu(Director of NIAOT) representing the NIAOT, appreciated the experts’ confirmation of project achievements, and substantial support from NSFC 。

Prof. Zhu also expressed that we still should carry out further engineering study based on these achievements, and prepare well for the actual application.

Ion beam figuring is a kind of advanced processing technology which is stress-free, non-contact polishing process under atomic level.

Its working principle is that the ion beam will bombard the surface of workpiece in the vacuum chamber. This will produce ultra-high precision mirror surface. Polishing process is controlled by computer.

This processing techonlogy which has the characteristics of high precision, without stress and very clean surface is particularly suitable for processing aspheric surface, hexagonal mirror and so on. It can be widely used in astronomical instruments and other areas of high precision electroptical equipment research.

NIAOT had started to study this technology from 2003. NIAOT had successfully developed this plant supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
