Deepest condolence for the death of Professor Charles Fehrenbach
member of the French academy of sciences and ex-president of Haute Provence Observatory

    It was a profound shock and sorrow that we learned of the death of Professor Charles Fehrenbach (94 years old) on January 9,2008.
    Prof. Charles Fehrenbach was a member of the French academy of sciences and a co-founder of European Southern Observatory. His works are well known in stellar spectroscopy and radial velocity measurement, for which he erected many spectrographs, as soon as 1948 at Haute Provence Observatory, and invented the normal dispersion bi-prism for objective spectroscopy.
    As vice-president of IAU, Prof. Fehrenbach decisively acted for P.R.China became a member of IAU. He also initiated several fruitful astronomical cooperation with Chinese astronomy.
    On 2001, Prof. Charles Fehrenbach and his wife visited NIAOT and LAMOST. They made a very good friendship with professor SuDingqing(member of the Chinese academy of sciences) and professor CuiXiangqun (the director of NIAOT).
    On January 11,professor CuiXiangqun sent and forward to Prof. Fehrenbach's wife and family the deepest condolence from the institute and herself personally.
